As a young professional photographer, my first gig out of college was as Assistant Photo Editor for SPORT magazine. From time to time, I was able to get press passes and photograph NY Giants and Jets games. I loved that job! Despite the fact that I am a huge sports fan, I loved the opportunity of being on the sidelines catching all of the action. It was here that I truly honed my technical expertise behind the lens. Over the years, I decided to open my own wedding photography business. I opened my doors in 1998 and never looked back. Though I loved the fast-paced environment of a sports sideline, there was nothing that I loved more than the purpose and meaning behind a wedding ceremony. It has been and continues to always be a privilege to be allowed “at the altar” with couples, documenting a major life event. Fast forward eighteen years and two of my loves collide, sports and weddings! I was beyond honored when I was called by Stacey Sainato of Peony Events to document the wedding of NY Yankee pitcher Dellin Betances and his wife, Janisa.
We recently caught up with Janisa and asked her if she would share how she and Dellin met and what their courtship was like. Janisa shared that she and Dellin met in early December 2007 when they were only nineteen years old. Dellin caught her eye because of his height, which she says she doesn’t even notice anymore! According to Janisa, there was an immediate connection and they danced the entire night. At the end of the evening he asked for her phone number but she declined. Though they went their separate ways that night, they reconnected a few days later through mutual friends. Janisa agreed to a “real date” and they went to the movies. That night, she gave him her number and they began dating early in January 2008.
Dellin and Janisa dated just shy of six years before he proposed on Christmas day, 2013. Janisa shared, “… I looked over at Dellin and he was on one knee holding up the most BEAUTIFUL ring I had ever seen! He asked me to marry him and I couldn’t even say yes because I was so emotional. Instead, I nodded yes!”
Dellin and Janisa were leagally married in November of 2014 in a small intimate ceremony with their close family members at the Upper Montclair Country Club. However, Dellin and Janisa are both very spiritual and very much wanted to get married by the church. So, later this year, Dellin and Janisa will celebrate once again! This upcoming wedding will be a larger affair with all of their friends and family. When I asked Janisa what she wanted most from the day, she said, “Our wish for that day is to just be able to pledge our love before God and have the Lord’s blessing in our union. We want our day to be filled with blessings, joy, happiness, and peace. We want everyone that we love to come out and celebrate with us and just have fun and dance the night away! ” We cannot wait to be a part of this special day. Stay tuned in 2017 for more!
