Looking for a Manhattan wedding photographer that will best capture your special day? A wedding photographer has the privilege of capturing some of the most precious and memorable moments of a couple’s life. When it comes to hiring a professional wedding photographer, every couple wants an outstanding, worry-free experience. Sometimes, there are issues and miscommunication between the soon-to-be newlyweds and their wedding photographer. To help prevent any problems that could arise, below are some important questions you should ask a wedding photographer before signing a contract.
Questions to Ask Manhattan Wedding Photographers
“Who will be my photographer(s) on the day of the wedding? What is the plan if they are unable to attend due to illness or unforeseen circumstances?” Some larger studios may book your appointment with a sales representative or agent. First, be sure you know who you are hiring and if they have any assistants that will be accompanying them to your event. Ask to schedule a follow-up meeting where the actual wedding photographer assigned to you is present so that you can get a sense of their personality and demeanor before you sign a contract. This is also the best time to ask what happens in case of an emergency. A solid backup plan is vital so that you are not doing any last minute scrambling for a replacement if your wedding photographer is rushed to the hospital or has to miss the event because of a death in the family.
Images by Berit is a woman owned, boutique wedding photography studio. When you book your wedding day you do so directly with either Berit Bizjak or her Business Manager, Carolyn. Berit is always the principal photographer on every wedding with a second photographer and in many cases an additional assistant. Ours is an intimate approach and you will always have direct access to your photographer from the very beginning.
“How much prior experience does my photographer have? What percentage of their work is composed of weddings?” It is important to first gauge how much experience a potential wedding photographer has. Photographer’s time commitments and skill sets vary greatly. Some only work part-time or may mostly photograph for other occasions. This doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t do an amazing job as your wedding photographer, but knowing their level of experience and expertise will allow you to have clear expectations from the start
Berit Bizjak, owner and principal photographer of Images by Berit, has been a full time wedding photographer since 1998. One hundred percent of her work is composed of weddings and wedding related events such as engagement sessions, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and day after brunches. Check out our recent article on why hiring a full-time wedding photographer is important.
“How long have they been a wedding photographer? Are references and/or reviews available for me to access?” Available references and reviews are another indicator of experience and will reflect accordingly in the pricing. References and reputation are very important. Ask around, read anonymous reviews online, and speak to former clients (preferably more recent ones).
Images by Berit, Inc. was incorporated in 1998 and Berit Bizjak has been a full time wedding photographer since this time. The couples we have worked with have generously shared their testimonials with us and we have selected some recent testimonials for our website. In addition, Images by Berit reviews can be found on The Knot, Wedding Wire and Inside Weddings. Many Images by Berit couples are willing to act as a reference. If you would like to speak with an Images by Berit couple, please let us know!
“Have they worked at our location before?” Every venue is new for every photographer at some point. So if the photographer you like has not documented a wedding in your specific venue don’t panic! Above and beyond the actual location one of the more important pieces of information for a wedding photographer should be the season and time of day in which the couple is getting married. Lighting is everything!
“Can we see a recent gallery from an entire wedding?” Seeing an entire wedding from start to finish is important to see how the whole day is covered. As you flip through the album, pay close attention to the style of the photography and make sure it matches what you want for your own. Keep a mental checklist to determine that they covered all of the major moments and formally posed photographs as well as fun, candid shots.
The best wedding photographers don’t just show up, snap some shots and call it a day. The best and most experienced wedding photographers will dedicate roughly 70 hours with each and every wedding. You may think, “How is that possible? My wedding day is maybe a total of 15 hours!” At Images by Berit, we generally dedicate 60-80 hours per wedding. Hop on over to one of our recent articles to see how the numbers add up!
“Are they willing to follow a list of suggested photographs?” Ask this question to check on how willing the wedding photographer is to work with you. Some will tell you, “just trust me.” when asked about a shot list, which can be a red flag. You want a wedding photographer who is going to capture the details and guests that are most meaningful to you, while still giving them the freedom to live in the moment and do what they do best. Specific details and desired shots can be discussed at a later date.
When you hire Images by Berit, we will schedule a time to meet about three months prior to your wedding. This meeting is designed to discuss all of your “must-have” photography. We will generate a custom document to your wedding including your day of timeline, must have photo list and more. This document will be sent to you and you can approve or change as needed. We never work without this list. It’s imperative and allows us to gather all of the images that are most important to you and your loved ones.
“What makes this photographer different than other wedding photographers? How do they describe their own photography style?” If your wedding photographer can’t answer this question in a way that makes you see why they are different, you might have to ask yourself if they are the best fit for you. Talk to the wedding photographer about whether you want traditional portraits, photojournalistic action shots of the day’s events, or if you fall somewhere in between and would like a blend of both. If you prefer black and white, highly edited, or modern photography, for example, this is the time to be sure you and this photographer are a match.
“When can we expect to see the photos after the wedding?” Managing expectations is key to any successful professional partnership in your wedding. Most wedding photographers release the images in stages. You will want to know when to expect your proofs, your album, and any time lines for purchasing photographs at a later date.
When you hire Images by Berit you will receive a specific timeline immediately following your wedding. This customized list will outline what to expect and when including but not limited to social media preview, online gallery, complete set of low resolution digital proofs and more, depending on the custom collection that you select.
“What do your collections include and what will I have to pay extra for?” Photography collections vary drastically. Some include a flat rate with à-la-carte extras, while other wedding photographers may offer various pre-customized collections. Fees often range from least to most time-intensive. Check to see if they will charge an additional amount for editing and album compilations, or if they are only considering the time allotted for the wedding. Some packages include personalized albums and a selection of various sized prints. Be sure you know what you are paying for.
Images by Berit offers a wide variety of custom collections to meet your specific needs. All of our collections include unlimited photography with two photographers, one of which will always be Berit Bizjak. For more information on how customize a collection specific to your needs please feel free to contact us!
“How much of a deposit is required to hold the date? When is the balance due? What is the preferred method of payment?” Find out when the deposit is due so that you don’t risk the chance of losing your wedding photographer to another couple who’s getting married on the same date.
When you hire Images by Berit we ask for a one-third retainer and signed contract to hold a date. The balance of your collection will be due 30 days from the day of your event. Our preferred method of payment is check, however we will accept Visa and Mastercard.
